T20 swings into action

Bay cricketing sides have double incentive this weekend with the first two rounds of the season long race for the Lonestar Tauranga T20 championship.

An interesting first up match-up, sees defending Baywide T20 champions Rotorua Central meet current Williams Cup titleholders City Sports Bar Te Puke, on Smallbone Park in the Sulphur City.

Last season, Central and Te Puke were rewarded with Bay of Plenty Cricket silverware after a number of years in the wilderness.

Last year's T20 match-up between the two inter-city rivals, in a rain interrupted encounter, resulted in Central grabbing the win and points on offer.

Te Puke posted 133 all out, with the Rotorua side reaching their rain adjusted target of 80 with seven wickets to spare.

In other opening round games, Element IMF Cadets meet 2012 and 2013 Baywide T20 champions Tauranga Boys College on Boord Park one.

Carrus Mount Maunganui square off with Whakatane United while Eves Realty Greerton plays BOP Indians.

The round two must watch match at Boord Park, is the Western Bay derby between Mount Maunganui and Cadets.

The two Western Bay sides share a rivalry dating back several decades, with the winner of the second round encounter taking early season bragging rights.

While Cadets defeated Mount Maunganui in the last qualifying round of the championship, the Mount had accumulated enough points to meet Central in the title decider.

Central meet fellow Rotorua contender BOP Indians in a late afternoon contest, Greerton play Tauranga Boys College with Te Puke facing Whakatane United.
