Rain and wind batter the Bay

A severe weather watch remains in place for the Bay of Plenty with predictions of more rain and strong winds.

According to the Te Puke weather station, the region has seen about 3.9mm of rain in the last 12 hours and wind gusts reached 43.9km/h at times.

The Bay of Plenty experienced some extreme weather overnight.

The MetService is predicting more showers today and an easing gale westerly as a series of fronts move across the country.

Meteorologist Elke Louw says there is going to be a definite wintry feel to the air over the next couple of days, with strong blustery winds and colder temperatures.

'The rain clears for a brief period for the North Island as we head towards the end of the week,” says Elke.

Another front approaching the Tasman Sea is likely to bring rain and strengthening northwest winds to western areas later in the week.
