Ute takes out power pole

Homes in the Welcome Bay area were without power last night after a ute hit a power pole on Kaitemako Road.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 10.30pm.

Police are investigating the cause of a crash which saw a power pole knocked over last night.

Tauranga Fire Brigade senior station manager Kevin Cowper says the pole came down onto the ute.

'The driver of ute was not badly injured and walked away from the crash,” he says. 'Power would have been out in the area for some time.”

Kevin says they were at the scene for about an hour.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the road was blocked for a while as the crash scene was cleared.

'The high voltage lines had to be isolated before the driver could be removed,” explains Ian. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Meanwhile, Tauranga Police were kept busy overnight with a spate of crashes in the area.

Fines have been issued after one crash saw two cars collide on 11th Ave, at the intersection of St John Street, at about 5pm.

Ian says there were no injuries and the fine was likely issued for failing to give way.

'About 4.30am, a car crashed into a barrier on Te Awanui Drive. Once again this was a non-injury,” he says.

'Around 10.30pm, a ute hit a power pole causing the pole to come down on top of the ute.”

The road was blocked for some time until the power pole was made safe.

Motorists are being asked to be careful on the roads, be patient and to drive to the conditions.
