Facebook lottery scam warning

Social media users are being warned to think twice before accepting friend requests from people they think they know.

A scam is making its way around Facebook where scammers make up profiles of people you know and tell you that you have won $250,000.

A screen shot of the Facebook page the link takes people to.

They then message users a link to another Facebook page and tell you to claim the winnings.

'They use a Facebook profile name to enter the lottery game and our name is among the winners. I got my money ($250,000) delivered to my doorstep - did they come to you home?” was the one of the first things the scammer said when speaking to a local resident online.

They go on to say: 'If not, you will have to contact the delivery agent Reggie Penny on Facebook. Send him a friend request and tell him you want to claim your winnings.”

The page has since been removed after being reported as a scam.

However, this is not the first time this sort of thing has happened with warnings about the Facebook Powerball Lottery scam first flagged back in 2004.

'Every day, thousands of these email messages or social networking posts are sent out by scammers to trick their potential victims into sending their personal information and money to claim bogus prizes or lottery winnings,” says www.onlinethreatalerts.com

'Currently, there is no Facebook Powerball Lottery and Facebook or other legitimate organizations will never ask you to send them your personal information via email, text message or telephone,” the site goes on to say.

If people do come across this sort of thing they are warned not to pass on personal details and to report the page to Facebook as a scam.
