Trophy bowls into Tauranga

Tauranga's jam packed summer of cricket is being given another international boost with fans set to catch a glimpse of the ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy next month.

Hot on the heels of the Blackcaps first ever international match at Mount Maunganui's Bay Oval this week the ICC Cricket World Cup will be in town on November 12, part of the build-up to the 2015 tournament.

Starting on November 6, the trophy begins a nationwide tour of New Zealand, with a stop for every one of the 22 years since the tournament was last here in 1992.

The flagship event of the international cricket calendar, will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand next February and March.

The Tauranga leg of the trip, from 7.30am to 11.30am, features an interactive exhibition on the history of the tournament, cricket skills challenges, giveaways and the chance to snap a pic with the trophy.

Head of New Zealand for ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, Therese Walsh, says the tour is the ideal way to give as many Kiwis as possible a chance to help kick start NZ's biggest ever summer of cricket.

'Cricket is our summer game and a national passion. We will have waited a generation for the return of what has grown to be one of biggest sporting events in the world, and this is the perfect way to show New Zealanders what the tournament is all about."

"For this trophy tour we've designed something really special that I believe will appeal to fans of all ages. Tauranga has got into the spirit of the tournament by embracing the opportunity to be part of the tour."

Tauranga City Mayor Stuart Crosby is excited to have the trophy in the city, which is home to New Zealand's newest international cricket venue.

'With the Bay Oval hosting the BlackCaps this week and the White Ferns New Zealand women set to play England here early next year, the trophy is an added draw card for cricket fans – young and old – and what better place to share it with the community than our waterfront.

'I'm looking forward to viewing the trophy and chancing my arm at some of the bowling and batting activities on the day.”

Fans are invited to share their photographs on Twitter and Facebook using the hashtags #cwc15 and #cwctrophytour.

Next year's ICC Cricket World Cup sees the Blackcaps drawn with Sri Lanka, Scotland, England, Australia, Afghanistan and Bangladesh in Pool A ahead of the knockout stages.

In 2011 New Zealand made it through to the final eight, after four wins in Pool A. They went on to beat South Africa by 49 runs before losing to Sri Lanka in the semi final.

The ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy stands 60cm tall and weighs 13kg. Made of silver and gold, it was designed and crafted in London by Garrard & Co, who also made the America's Cup and English Premier League Trophy.

The trophy features a golden globe of the world on which all continents are represented. This globe signifies a cricket ball and is held up by three silver columns shaped as stumps and bails. These represent the three fundamentals of cricket: batting, bowling and fielding.
