The skies over Mount Maunganui Main Beach were awash with colourful balloons overnight as hundreds of people gathered in tribute for missing five-year-old Jack Dixon.

More than 100 people attended the event on Saturday evening to light candles and release balloons, some the same colour as Jack's favourite superhero – Spiderman.

Rory Coghaln organised the event via social media to show support for the family of Jack, who was washed out to sea on October 1.

Jack was playing at the water's edge in an area known as Shelly Beach when a large wave swept him and two girls out to sea. The girls managed to find safety, but Jack disappeared from view.

Search and rescue teams began searching for the boy immediately, but sadly no trace of him has been found. An official police search for Jack was suspended 10 days after the five-year-old went missing.
