Benefits figures declining

Latest benefits figures show 423 fewer claimants in the Tauranga District in the September quarter compared to the same time last year.

BOP MP Todd Muller says the Western Bay of Plenty saw a decline of 185 people on benefits over the year.

'Welfare reforms mean more people are getting the help they need to get off welfare and into work,” says Todd. 'Intensive support such as help with childcare and study has made getting into the workforce an achievable goal.

'Benefit numbers are tracking downwards. Nationwide there are 10,000 fewer people on welfare compared to September 2013 and more than 70 per cent of these are solo parents. This September quarter is the lowest since 2008.

'These figures show our reforms are working to break the cycle of welfare dependency some families are trapped in. This means the headway we are making now will pay off for generations.

'Getting off welfare and into work means a better life, better opportunities and a brighter future for Bay of Plenty people and their families.

'Many families in the Bay of Plenty can now look forward to the increased choices brought by financial independence.”

I'm currently between jobs and not on any benefit. With a partner who works minimum hours for minimum wages, I qualify for $2 a week. In the last 10 years I must have paid at least $100k in tax. Ask for a little bit back and you get shot down in flames. And as far as I'm concerned, Work and Income is a misnomer, they have SFA to do with income. They're right wing agenda seems to be leading the way.
