Stick wielder admits guilt

A Tauranga man accused of attacking two police officers with a stick and breaking into the Salvation Army has admitted his guilt.

Ashley Harris, 33, is charged with two counts of assaulting a person by stabbing, one count of escaping custody and two counts of burglary.

He pleaded guilty to the charges through his lawyer Ben Ron as he appeared in Tauranga District Court via audio visual link today.

According to court documents, Harris entered the Salvation Army on Cameron Road on October 15 with the intent to commit a crime.

As police responded to the call, Harris assaulted both constables with the pointed end of a stick as a weapon.

On October 14, Harris entered the Versatile Homes building with the intent of committing a crime.

In court today, Judge Thomas Ingram remanded Harris in custody and called for a pre-sentence report, along with an electronically monitored sentence report with community detention and home detention appendices.

He is next due to appear in court on December 2.
