Arrest in tourist robbery case

A 28-year-old man has been arrested for alleged robbing and assaulting two tourists camping at McLaren Falls Park overnight.

The man is charged with robbery and assault with intent to commit robbery and is due to appear in Tauranga District Court tomorrow.

Police were called to the camp site at around 6am following multiple complaints from campers.

Speaking to SunLive this morning, Detective Sergeant Darryl Brazier says the man alleged demanded car keys from the tourists - a request that was denied.

A male camper was then assaulted when the accused alleged attempted to steal the van he was sleeping in.
