'KFC' community garden to open

A community garden built by community-based offenders in Greerton will be officially opened on October 24.

The garden will be officially opened on October 24.

The garden built and planted by offenders on Chadwick Road while completing their community work sentences has been around a month in the making.

Tauranga community corrections service manager Karen van de Zee says many offenders simply do not have essential life skills and this leads to their offending. 'One of the ways Corrections is helping community-based offenders to stay out of trouble is by ensuring that more of them do Work and Living Skills (WLS) training as part of their sentence. Corrections have set a target of 10,000 offenders completing WLS by 2017.

'Work on the garden commenced at the end of August with planting occurring throughout September.

'We have had fantastic support from The Good Neighbours Trust who have provided a mentor to work alongside the offenders and our very own Des Flett (community work supervisor) who has been instrumental in the development.”

Karen says the garden already has a variety of produce growing rapidly and the food will be used for a further WLS course 'KFC” or Kai For Cheap.

'This is a cooking course run at the community work centre looking at cooking healthy food on a budget.”
