More original music at the Mount

Consistency. Got to have consistency. Once again this week we have a great gig and something else.

The difference this week is that instead of something weird and wacky there's an apology. It seems that, inadvertently, I caused offence with last week's column. There's a lot of it about these days...

Since it was completely unintentional – and causing offence is the worst thing you can possibly do in society these days – I'd like to follow the example of our many sterling politicians and righteously grovel.

Because last week, when talking about local venues I wrote this:
'...as far as venues go, a lot of it is about the vibe. I know people who refuse to go to hear rock music or the like at Baycourt because they say the atmosphere is too stifling and you can't dance. Alternatively, I know people who refuse to go to Brewers Bar because the atmosphere is too rough.”

And I unreservedly apologise to the good people at Brewers Bar.

What I meant to write was this:
'...as far as venues go, a lot of it is about the vibe. I know people who refuse to go to hear rock music or the like at Baycourt because they say the atmosphere is too stifling and you can't dance. Alternatively, I know people who refuse to go to Brewers Bar because they say the atmosphere is too rough.”

And, I guess, those two little words make all the difference.

The point I was trying to make is that different people have different, and not necessarily accurate, opinions of different venues. I used those examples because Baycourt is our most 'upmarket” venue and Brewers Bar is our most 'rock ‘n' roll” venue. I did not intend to suggest that Brewers Bar is rough, or even that its atmosphere is rough, just that some people – some people – perceive that to be the case.

It astonishes me that this should bring on talk of lost bookings and lawyers. But I guess that's the world we live in. Panama's murderous ex-dictator Manuel Noriega is currently suing the video game ‘Call of Duty' (from prison) for portraying him in a bad light. So anything is possible.

For the record, I don't think Brewers Bar is disconcertingly rough, otherwise I wouldn't go there. Nor would I recommend other people go there, as I did when I spent the previous column writing about a band at Brewers Bar. You're welcome.

As it happens, the gig I wanted to mention this week is also at the Mount (a lot of good stuff happening there), at Rosie O'Grady's, which I hear has regular music but I must confess to never having visited.

That will change on Saturday, October 25, when the Tuner Band play along with singer/songwriters Megan Sidwell and Brendan Mccarthy. I'm keen to see all three acts and at $15 it sounds like a steal.

Tuner is Derek Toner's nickname and band. He's the guitar-playing second singer from Nine Mile Stone, who recorded a very fine album earlier this year called ‘The Importance of Yar'. It's sophisticated adult rock with a nod to Roger Waters. Derek has a much lighter approach on stage than Nine Mile Stone and his songs merit attention.

He'll have the full six-piece band and is hoping to release a second album in early 2016 so will be airing a lot of new material at Rosie's.

An award-winning Tauranga native, now living in Auckland, Megan Sidwell has recently recorded her new single up there at Neil Finn's Roundhead Studios, again with Ben King (Goldenhorse) who produced her debut EP, ‘Forever on a Sunday' last year. This will be her last NZ show for a while as at the end of November Megan makes the move to Melbourne in search of musical opportunities. Find more at megansidwell.com.

Meanwhile, Brendan Mccarthy is a relative newbie to the original music scene after some years of playing in cover bands. He is currently recording an album at Welcome Bay's Colourfield Studio and we'll be back to check on progress. He'll be playing his brand of contemporary guitar rock 'unplugged” with a little help from Anthony Coulter on piano.

Doors open at 7.30 and the music starts at 9pm. Sounds good.

Brendan Mccarthy will play at Rosie O'Grady's on Saturday October 25 with the Tuner Band and Megan Sidwell.
