Accused pizza robber in custody

A Merivale man accused of pointing a pistol in the face of a pizza delivery man and robbing him of pizzas has been remanded in custody until Friday.

The 22-year-old appeared in Tauranga District Court today charged with aggravated robbery and was granted interim name suppression until his next appearance.

He was arrested last night following an armed police callout in Merivale when a pizza delivery driver reported a gun had been pointed at him.

The driver was delivering pizza to a Merivale address just after 9pm when a man presented a pistol and demanded he hand over the pizza.

Western Bay of Plenty response manager Senior Sergeant Owen O'Brien says the delivery driver fled and immediately contacted Police.

The Tauranga Armed Offenders Squad was deployed to the address and the 22-year-old was arrested about an hour alter.

In court today, defence lawyer Taryn Bayley asked for her client to be remanded in custody without plea until Friday.

Judge Robert Wolff granted the request and remanded the accused in custody until Friday when he will appear before a judge.
