Walk among the guns and roses

This month Tauranga residents are invited to get active while learning about the city's early settlement history.

The Guns and Roses Historic Walk will take place on October 14 and October 30, as part of the Sport Bay of Plenty's ‘Play in the Bay' outdoor activities promotion.

Organiser Ned Nicely says next Tuesday will probably be the 19th Guns and Roses Historic Walk he's led since it was established.

'The walk is a way of giving something back to the community. It's all free and it's all about fun.

'So I will be doing another two walks this month and I'm looking forward to them.”

The hour-long walk starts from behind the Tauranga Police Station on Cliff Rd; and Ned will guide walkers along the Monmouth Redoubt then to the neighbouring rose garden.

From Cliff Rd the group will follow a circuit along Park St to Cameron Rd, which also takes in the Domain and its cannons.

Then the group will go back past the courts along Mclean St to the start of the walk, behind the police station.

Ned says along the journey he'll explain to people what Tauranga was like when the first settlers arrived.

'It's a popular walk, all the facts are correct but we also wanted to have some fun and a laugh so made it a bit light-hearted.

'The walk has also become more popular since the 150th anniversary of the Gate Pa Battle, which was held during April.”

The ‘Play in the Bay' initiative provides a calendar full of beginner activities and events to help get locals active, having fun and trying something new.

Each month is themed and activities are held all over the Bay of Plenty for all ages, fitness levels and abilities.

The Guns and Roses Historic Walk takes place on Tuesday, October 14, starting at 10am.

The second historic walk will be held on Thursday, October 30, starting at 1.30pm.

I have not been on this walk with Ned myself, but having worked with Ned in the past I'm sure that this would be a memorable experience. Ned has had a love of the cities (TOO) MANY parks and reserves for many years and his passion would probably be for the cities rose garden and hothouse on Cliff Road. I wish you well Ned, you crazy american (Great to see you looking so well).
