Country fires restricted

Spending at evening gathered round an outside fire is now a restricted activity in the Tauranga Moana rural fire district.

The rules change on October 1. All open fires in the rural fire district require permits, says NZ Fire Service Greerton Station Officer Richard Moreland.

Rural outdoor fires now need permits

The reminder comes after Greerton fire fighters were called to a fire on a Pyes Pa Road property on Saturday night, to find residents seated round a pile of burning furniture.

'It is a reminder to people that the rules have changed,” says Richard.

'Anyone I've spoken to is not really aware of it.

'It probably highlights a need to let people know again that the Western Bay Moana is back into its restricted fire season. It flicks over from an open season requiring no permits on October 1 to the restricted season, but in a lot of cases it takes a while to get through.

Gas fire barbecues are exempt also cultural cooking of sorts, says Richard

National Institute for Water and Atmosphere's regional predictions for October to December show it may become dry in the Bay of Plenty before Christmas. Rainfall has a 45-50 per cent chance of being in the near normal range for the north and west of the North Island, and has a 35-40 per cent chance of being normal or below normal in the east of the North Island. Normal or above normal rainfall is likely, with a 40 per cent chance in all South Island regions.
