Your thoughts on public art policy

Tauranga City Council is calling for the public's opinion into the development of a public art policy.

Workshops will be held at the Arataki Community Centre on Wednesday, October 22, and at Tauranga City Council Chambers on Wednesday, October 29.

TCC is developing this policy after requests from the arts community for a more transparent and consistent process for considering the acceptance of art on public land and buildings.

Fundamentally, the policy is about how council will make future decisions about public art.

SunLive asked members of the community what they thought about art in Tauranga.

This isn't just about acceptable art

It is also about the nonsense. The current wording is basically a catch all - 'an activity so that the policy includes all art forms that take place in a public space”. Like a lot of rubbish these days - The pile of bricks in the Tate, the filthy bed, the statue in a condom or the bifurcated cow - if you say it's art, then that's good enough for some. So you tell me WHAT IS ART?

Art can't be policied

By definition art resists the wordification of those who perhaps make their living from writing gobbledygook. Best to leave the real artists to get on with their lives and livings and cut spending money on this sort of nonsense.

Art can give people enormous pleaser. It can also cause a reaction for or against. Public art makes a city interesting. Art by design is there to stimulate debate to make people pause and think. Life without art would be pretty dull.

GET INFORMED!

This is not about rates costs. Please can we put this to bed?! This is about a city that badly needs an arts policy to create a vibrant interesting and amazing city - and what does that to any culture and space? ART. This is about everyone that chooses to live in a community, and we all need to have a say. The artists will make it happen, just allow them to have the policy and protection to work around. The reporting of this article does not explain at ALL what an arts policy will actually mean to Tauranga. Take note of the Public Arts Talk series which will be available to attend before the policy goes through to GET INFORMED!!!
