Call to scupper the waka

Feisty grandmother Robyn Bishop drew herself up to her full five foot nothing this week and delivered a short emphatic message to Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby: 'No”.

That's ‘no' to the plastic waka.

A defiant Robyn Bishop sends Mayor Stuart Crosby a clear message.

'Some things are made to go together – jelly and ice cream, toast and honey,” says Robyn of Pyes Pa.

But says Robyn, this arch-opponent of the tupper-waka, some things aren't meant to share the same space.

'Like several storeys of glaring white plastic and a fantastic harbour view.”

And just when the contentious proposal seemed to be slipping off the public agenda, Robyn has fired it up again. And her's is not a lone voice from the suburbs.

'When the waka proposal was floated, there was an outpouring of opposition. There were dozens of complaints to SunLive and The Weekend Sun and other media.”

'So why isn't the Mayor and the waka think-tank listening?” asks Robyn.

'Are they in a bunker somewhere, insulated from the outrage going on around them? Do they feel they have immunity from the wishes of those paying them to represent us?”

But Mayor Stuart Crosby say he's listening. And what he's hearing is a lot of support 'and a lot of heated comment with no knowledge or fact”.

'We are waiting for a full report and then we will engage. People are being premature.”

So the waka is not a 'goer” yet – however there's a vision it could become a cultural, technological and innovation showcase for the city.

But it's 'a vision of major tackiness,” according to Robyn. She wants Tauranga to rise up and scupper the proposal now. And this week on a glorious sunny afternoon stood defiantly in The Strand to send the Mayor and the Waka project team a word of advice.

'Do not touch our waterfront. What part of ‘do not touch' do you not understand?”

But the Mayor remains unflustered. 'We may say no, we may need more information, we may say yes subject to conditions. But it could come down to resource consent .”

Robyn may present as sweet, smiling and demure. But under provocation she can muster some bite. 'I have strong opinions but I don't get too controversial because I don't want my windows broken.”

And this week she stood proudly on her soapbox and wouldn't climb down.

I agree with you totally with Robyn I think its a real waste of ratepayers money, this council needs to be kept in check for spending our hard earned money on rubbish

I do not know where Mayor Crosby is coming from. The poll by different news media has shown no. People have written no and he still thinks he has a majority. Perhaps as well as election for new Councillor a referendum on how people want waka and how people want amalgamation. The more I talk and listen to people they do not want, well done Robyn. Just hope more people voice their thoughts on the Waka. Also lights going in old Cossie Club is it in secret use?

I don't want it either, but . . ?

Ever noticed in Tauranga how whenever someone comes up with any idea it's an immediate No from all the grizzlers? I think it has no place on the waterfront and there should be no rates funding but surely an idea can be discussed before being dismissed or accepted? Isn't that part of democracy, people having ideas at least considered? I wonder how Robyn would have considered the Eiffel Tower or the Sydney Opera House? Both detested when planned and even when first built. I don't particularly like the plastic waka but even more I don't like the "I've made my mind up" smallminded thinking from some loud people anywhere.

What doesn't he understand about "WE DO NOT WANT IT" There are none so deaf as those who do not want to hear.

nay sayers?

Perhaps the "NO" answers are not the problem, perhaps it is the ideas in the first place and the "NO" answer is then well justified to come out and happen. Of course the usual suspects leap to the forefront in support of it.

There are better things

Posted on 11-10-2014 13:52 | By Merlin

There are much better things to spend ratepayers money on such as services that need drastic attention. This is all about an ego trip.

Embarassment

Posted on 11-10-2014 14:19 | By peecee09

It is a total cringe and embarrassment that our city nz's 5th largest does not have a museum and here is the daft TCC wanting to plant a plastic monstrosity and block out our view of our real asset , our harbour. Double daft if you ask me.

Who wants it & why???

Posted on 11-10-2014 14:42 | By Calm Gully

I agree NO to the waka! Who really wants it??? I can't understand Maori wanting it and definitely not Tauranga rate-payers. It is a PLASTIC eyesore. Nothing traditional about it. WHY??? WHO??

Daft idea.

Posted on 11-10-2014 14:45 | By dgk

If this fake plastic waka is the best idea people can come up with, then no wonder everyone keeps saying "No". It's a really daft idea that doesn't deserve anymore ratepayer money to be spent on it.

Plastic Waka

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO - a thousand times NO to the Waka.

Yae Robyn!!!

Posted on 11-10-2014 16:04 | By sambro

Robyn is right and the plastic waka is obviously no architectural achievement. It's ugly and an insult to the real deal.

With all the 'publicity'

Posted on 11-10-2014 17:22 | By robin bell

the Waka is getting from the whinging minority, including Robyn,it probably is half way to success.I hope Council take no notice,do a proper analysis and make decisions based on that.I agree totally with BullShtAlert, the whingers represent no one,but themselves. Robin Bell.

Hullo - IT'S A TENT!

Posted on 11-10-2014 17:33 | By Disappointed

Who would have dreamed that a big white plastic tent could ever become "a cultural, technological and innovation showcase for the city". On a more serious note and of far greater concern is the Mayors rhetoric that echoes a deal already done behind closed doors.

More humour

Posted on 11-10-2014 18:13 | By Sambo Returns

from Mr Crosby, way to many people holding hands and in collusion with each other, he cannot be seen to be dismissive of one of his little entities, go Robyn, and to BullShtAlert expected better from you, there are many better ideas which do not get heard, only the chosen few get to have a say on making this city somewhere to treasure, what they are doing is wasting ratepayer funds on ideas the majority do not support, once again GO ROBYN!!!!

Plastic Waka Ratepayers Cost

Posted on 11-10-2014 21:09 | By BAATS

Robyn - you are right who needs it and although I am sure that we will be advised that there will be no cost to the ratepayer I reckon it will be like the ferry (no cost but the public had to deal with it after all the private enterprises went broke - walked away) adn the ex-Navy workshop still sitting at the wharf going nowehere yet it has been reported that Council is paying the wharfage, etc - but of course they are not ratepayers, just an outfit that takes money from ratepayers and wastes much of it. Next protest?

Posted on 11-10-2014 22:10 | By nzsister

Robyn - please let me know when you plan your next protest. I want to join you. We dont need a plastic waka at the waterfront, and I dont want my rates to be spent putting it somewhere else.

Arrogant ....

Posted on 11-10-2014 23:31 | By Murray.Guy

You arrogant ..... But Mayor Stuart Crosby say he's listening. And what he's hearing is a lot of support 'and a lot of heated comment with no knowledge or fact”. For rational thinking folk Mr Mayor they don't need to spend thousands on no-brainers which you have a habit of doing with other peoples money! "No knowledge or fact" ... unbelievable if it was anyone but Mayor Crosby!

Run a Poll Please Sunlive

Posted on 12-10-2014 08:47 | By Mary Faith

So the Mayor is receiving a lot of support - I don't believe this! He is determined to do it! It is not supposed to cost the ratepayers a penny but you can bet it has cost thousands already! All these 'sub' groups doing the investigations are contracted by and paid from our rates. SUNLIVE - THANKS FOR GIVING THIS MATTER SO MUCH PUBLICITY - PLEASE NOW RUN A POLL ON THE MATTER. We will show the Mayor how wrong he is!

Auckland didnt want the damn thing so why the heck should we. NO No No.

My point is aimed at the mindless anti brigade

Posted on 12-10-2014 16:58 | By BullShtAlert

Just replying to the expression of surprise at my earlier comments. At first look I don't favour this monstrosity, but I can't stand the don't even take a good look at a proposal attitudes I see in our city. No this, no that and none of the other, either. Maybe it could bring life to the historical village which really needs a boost? I'm against any council/ratepayer funding, but what's wrong with considering an idea? I feel sorry for anyone who ever has an idea in this town because there are plenty of naysayers who shoot ideas down before they've even heard the full story. I call that stupid.

frostbite

I think someone else has used the NO card already. Destinations are proven economic drivers. New play grounds. Beautifully kept beaches and parks. These are things that make people get out of the house and be active in nature and the community. The Waka is a example of a destination with a purpose. It is a unusual peace of contempery architecture That has show cased New Zealand to the world. It is the perfect place to talk about our shared history with the Gate Par Battle display being a story that will interest local and international guests to Tauranga. This would be a fantastic addition to down town at the end of the strand were the current waka is. The new waka would be large enough to house this as well rather than it continuing to deteriorate where it is. Being at the end it will not blocktheview

Hooray

Posted on 12-10-2014 20:16 | By Jitter

Good on you Robyn. Even Colin Bidois has come out publicly against it. Crosby is a clown if he believes there is a lot of support for the waka.

Crosby

Posted on 13-10-2014 02:27 | By YOGI BEAR

He has been talking to the faithful few and so has a bewildering blissful view as a result. The truth of the public views is something else.

My solution, think then decide

Posted on 13-10-2014 13:35 | By BullShtAlert

Been thinking about this idea a lot and admittedly it doesn't appeal. But here's an idea. How about hearing the full proposal first, then deciding? This may seem a novel idea, to actually consider the full details before making your mind up. Robin obviously learnt by experience that some things go together like her quoted icecream and jelly or toast and honey (though I'd have said marmalade). Maybe the waka and some other location might just work, especially if Council keep out of it. So rather than being feisty let's be known for being thoughtful.

Auckland

Posted on 14-10-2014 17:49 | By Frostbite

We in Tauranga Mt Maunganui should not be influenced by what Auckland wants or does not want. We can think for ourselves.

Go Robyn!

Posted on 24-10-2014 11:10 | By DAD

All seems to have gone quiet on this subject, hope they just not informing us. Let Auckland have the Ugly thing!

What A Joke this Is

Posted on 25-10-2014 12:50 | By carpedeum

No one want this on the Taurang Water front- let alone have the Council spend any of OUR precious rates money on it. Please try listening to people who elected you TCC

???

Posted on 25-10-2014 13:54 | By kimmaree

What does he want to do with it when it gets here?

Really Why ?

Posted on 29-10-2014 20:58 | By Dr Phil

Why would anyone want this piece of rubbish, hardly a historical piece is it? and to be honest even if it was, why would we?? We ALL live in a Multicultural society, not a Maori society, do whats best for society as a whole - Bin this unwanted council Fantasy, Its not as if the council have an excess of funds to go with this. Stuart Crosby you need to start listening to those who pay your wages, Its not your money, its OURS in case you have forgotten !!

Slap it Down

Posted on 04-11-2014 08:46 | By Watchdog

We don't want this waka. It's about as useless as a wet sock and will cost us in our Rates. Just like Water Meters did years ago. And we still spend half a million dollars a year on their upkeep and meter reading - all paid for by our water rates. There was no proven benefit big enough to justify their $10million (minimum) cost. Take them away as well. Well done Robyn. This is not small-minded thinking when you realise who will be paying for it.
