Public asked for arts policy input

The public has the opportunity to provide input into the development of a public art policy for Tauranga this month.

Workshops will be held at the Arataki Community Centre on Wednesday, October 22, and at Tauranga City Council Chambers on Wednesday, October 29.

Owen Dippie's Girl with a Pearl Earring on the wall of Kale Print on Cameron Road.

TCC is developing this policy after requests from the arts community for a more transparent and consistent process for considering the acceptance of art on public land and buildings.

Fundamentally, the policy is about how council will make future decisions about public art.

As part of the policy a full definition of public art will be developed. At this stage it is defined as 'an activity so that the policy includes all art forms that take place in a public space”.

It includes permanent, temporary and performance art, plus conceptual contributions of artists to the design of public spaces.

The policy will not cover privately owned works or anything on private land, the Civic Art Collection, any advertising and billboards located in public space or impromptu public art activities.

It will cover the process for considering the acceptance of public art, outcomes and criteria for public art and for deaccessioning of public art.

The first workshop will be held at the Arataki Community Centre on Grenada Street, Arataki, on Wednesday, October 22, from 12pm to 2pm.

It will be followed by a second workshop in the TCC Chambers at 91 Willow Street, Tauranga, on Wednesday, October 29, from 5.30-7.30pm

You will need to register for either workshops by emailing: haveyoursay@tauranga.govt.nz

We need more statues of people around the place. Where is General Cameron, Rawiri Puhirake or Bishop Pompallier. Some more recent people could include Bob Owens. (They need to be dead)

Why????

not try a different way, we give you a figure we think its worth and thats how mush you get..... end of bloody story, if you would like to talk transparency?, this will work!!!!!every little council entity are holding their hands out, all with their own little projects. Well thats my input.

Another MINORITY group

Posted on 10-10-2014 23:52 | By How about this view!

Forcing their personal tastes and opinions on the ratepayer purse again. I would go one step further than Sambo returns and suggest that Council has no more input in the world of questionable art, than to offer "Some" public space and let this minority group FUND-RAISE to sate their thirst for recognition. Take the begging bowl around the business owners for a change, the ratepayers are burdened enough with petty "WANTS".

a horrendous waste of money

How can you have an arts policy because art is in the mind of the beholder and therefore is beyond definition? I think someone has too much money in their budget???

Here's my input:

I am really happy for Council to support art, I am completely comfortable that some of my rates go towards the wonderful art gallery we have here.
