A 67-year-old man critically injured in a fatal car crash in Ngongotaha yesterday has died.

The man was transported to Waikato Hospital after being involved in the two car head-on crash on State Highway 36 (Hamurana Road), near Leonard Road about 2pm.

A van and a station wagon vehicle crashed head-on on State Highway 36 yesterday afternoon.

Another person died on the way to hospital yesterday.

The crash also involved a Tauranga couple, who are in a stable condition in Rotorua Hospital, and two children, who have been treated and discharged.

The crash caused the road to be closed for a couple of hours. It was reopened about 4.30pm.

The serious crash unit is investigating the cause of the crash.

Police say inquiries are continuing to see what caused the accident.

No other information is available until police have spoken with the next of kin.
