Fatal crash victim named

The man killed in a crash on State Highway 25, near Whakatete Bay, has been named as Barry James Corbin.

Barry, a 60-year-old from Paeroa, died after the motorbike he was riding crashed with a car on the highway, north of Thames, on Saturday afternoon.

Police have named the man killed on the highway north of Thames at the weekend.

Two other people received minor injuries in the crash which blocked both lanes of the highway for several hours.

A funeral will be held for Barry today at the Paeroa Co-Operating Parish Church.

The fatal crash comes days before Waikato Police launch an operation focussing on motorcycle safety.

Waikato Road Policing Manager Inspector Freda Grace is deeply concerned at the number of fatal motorcycle crashes this year.

'There is no single factor common to these crashes. It's a variety of things including not riding to the conditions and failing to take crucial safety precautions.

'We have many older riders who take their bikes out infrequently and they're not as attuned to their bikes as they once were.”

Freda says the bikes they're riding are more powerful than ever.

This coming weekend motorcyclists can expect a heightened Police presence on popular motorcycle routes across the Waikato.

'As we gear up for summer and the traffic picks up on popular coastal routes, we want motorcyclists and all other road users to take a moment to remember that the road is a social space involving people.

'It's not a solo pursuit - one person's actions behind the wheel or atop a motorcycle directly affects others.”

Nothing better to do

so this weekend the police will be out in force openly harassing motorcyclist. Is this really about motorcycle safety or is it more about revenue gathering. Is there no other road crimes that the police can work on.??? What about staking out one or to major, light controlled, intersections and picking up the red light runners in cars and more so push bikes. What about the cell phone users??? still out there still breaking the law, still thinking they are exempt. This exercise this weekend and probably through the holiday period is going to be nothing short of harassment by the boys in blue. What a huge waste of police resources when there are far greater criminals populating our roads on a daily basis.

Totally agree

Right on s83cruiser. There is no one more aware of the dangers associated with riding a motorcycle than the rider ontop of it. Dont think they need reminding of this, total wast of resources. I have more problems with drivers not paying attention whilst on there phones than anything else!
