Retirement home hearing

An application to build a four storey retirement home on vacant land on the intersection of Norris Street and 1oth Avenue will be heard today by Tauranga City Council.

Metlifecare's application for the site will go to a hearing, with the four and five storey apartment block and basement car park exceeding city council zone rules.

The proposed development

Only immediately affected neighbours are able to make submissions on the proposal, and nine have done so already, with four wishing to be heard by the Commissioner Peter Crawford.

All the received submissions so far oppose the application.

Metlifecare has already developed much of the northern half of the block that spans Tenth Avenue, Norris Street, Devonport Road and Eleventh Avenue.

The development proposal concerns the currently vacant, 2000m2 northwest corner.

It will incorporate 42 independent living apartments, a care facility with 38 beds and parking for 57 cars.

The project will also require the removal of some street trees that border the area, with the main entrance accessed off Tenth Avenue.

logistically, as a caregiver who has worked in these facilities, the first thing that entered my index was safety, such a high rise complex, what if their was a fire? Or earthquake? Ok for able bodied people but not for retired folk looking for help and assisted living?
