Flare ignites sea search

A flare sighting in the Bay of Plenty has initiated another sea search tonight.

The single orange flare was reported off the coast south of Maketu, near Otamarakau, reports Maritime Radio.

Eastpack Rescue is on another mission tonight, searching for the source of a reported flare. (File photo)

Eastpack Rescue, the Maketu-based Coastguard vessel, was dispatched about 9.30pm with six members aboard to investigate the sighting.

Conditions at sea have been testing, with heavy swells. Coastguard personnel in the region have also been involved with other major sea operations, including the search for a five year old boy swept away from Mount Maunganui and still missing.

is any recreational "boatie" doing out in these sea conditions is beyond me, and I also hope that this is a legitimate call out, our volunteers risking their lives to help a genuine case is one thing, risking it for some "tosser" thinking its funny letting of a flare for a laugh is another!!!, but thank goodness we have a group of people willing to help others for no reward, many thanks to all you volunteers out there.
