Sunny weekend hectic for lifeguards

A swell of callouts to on-land rescues kept Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service busy at the weekend, as the weather warms and summer nears.

The club's general manager Glenn Bradley says things 'got pretty hectic” at the weekend, with a high volume of calls including numerous rescues from Mauao.

'It was a busy weekend for us, with people starting to think about summer with daylight saving coming around, and a lot of people out and about.”

Despite the high volume of callouts, all has gone well, says Glenn.

'We sort of book-ended the weekend with two up the Mount: the first one up the Mount Saturday morning was an ankle injury at the top, and then yesterday afternoon we had an elderly man with a fall and an arm injury, who we had to transport back down.”

Some may be surprised at the lack of ocean-oriented rescues, but Glenn says it's par for the course.

'Although we're essentially a surf lifesaving club, the majority of our responses are around the Mount, either the Mount base track, or on their way up or down from the summit.”

Summer is coming, and it heralds the end of an unusually busy winter season for lifesavers.

'We probably had on average at least one incident every two weeks.

'It's been a pretty mild winter, and there have been a lot of people out and about around the Mount.”

And as the nights recede, Glenn knows business will only increase.

'Summer is coming up; we're preparing for that. We're just about to roll into our volunteer lifeguard patrols.

'They'll start from Labour Weekend, and patrol every weekend through to the start of April.”
