Police pilot Papamoa project

A pilot project aimed at increasing police visibility and presence in Papamoa will be trialled by Western Bay of Plenty Police next month.

Police will operate a contact centre out of the Papamoa Community Centre for two months, starting October 10.

Papamoa Senior Sergeant Deidre Lack says the intention of the pilot is to increase visibility and presence in the immediate vicinity and provide the community with opportunities to discuss matters of concern.

Issues could include:

  • Neighbourhood disputes and incidents which are causing people to feel unsafe
  • Domestic disputes for which parties seek further advice or guidance
  • Public safety concerns in which the actions of some are impacting on the enjoyment of others
  • Youth truancy and other issues of social delinquency
  • Driving concerns and the impact of drivers behaviour on others

The pilot is not designed to receive reports of criminal offending nor other emergency matters which must be directed to police at the time of the offence occurring, says Deidre.

The pilot seeks to address low level matters with the potential to escalate or are causing a disturbance within the community.

The contact centre will be manned by police on Friday afternoons between 1pm-3pm.

Residents can meet with officers to discuss such matters.

To make a scheduled appointment phone the Papamoa Police Station on (07) 572 2440. Appointments are not a must.
