Traffic remedies questioned

Roadworks aimed at reducing speed and the number of accidents at a Greerton intersection are nothing more than a waste of taxpayer money, says one angered resident.

The work costing $8000 at the Chadwick and Mansels road intersection is nearing completion as part of Tauranga City Council's city-wide road safety works programme.

Mansels Road, once unblemished, now has raised concrete speed humps in both directions and a traffic island as motorists near Chadwick Road – to the dismay of Mike O'Brien.

'All of the residents say they can't believe it and what a waste of taxpayer money it is.”

Mike, who is wheelchair bound, says he was told by Opus International consultants the work is being undertaken to slow traffic down and reduce the number of accidents at the roundabout.

He believes the changes are unnecessary additions to the neighbourhood's road.

'I am in a wheelchair and have watched the intersection, all the vehicles slow down already coming to a stop at the intersection. There is no need for it.”

Tauranga City Council traffic safety and planning specialist Wayne Thompsonsays the site is one of 28 across the city being modified or improved as part of council's annual minor road safety works programme.

Council deem the intersection a problem with regards to speed, with three crashes recorded between September 2013 and February 2014, he says.

'There have been a number of speed related crashes over the past five years and also crashes relating to vehicles failing to stop or give way.”

Mike says the additions, particularly the traffic island, will also pose problems for buses attempting to turn into the street.

'The street is very narrow and the buses struggle to get round the corner as is.”

Well I have lived in Mansels Rd for 15 years and now across the intersection for another 6 or 7 and never saw an accident since these concrete monstrosities arrived and the we had 3 in about 2 weeks that I saw. all that will happen now is that the slow vehicles going into Mansels rd will get hit up the bum by those going to the roundabout. It must be run out your budget time at council. No brains at all.

Dumb and Dumber

About as dumb as planting another concrete crash pad in Cameron Rd by the Greenpark School. No one crosses the rd there and its now created a problem for all those that want to line up to turn into Argyle st after and before school. Better is they had fixed the Maleme St intersection that they screwed up and made more dangerous. Why don't they ask the people who use these intersections instead of consulting their computers an a wet day.And we pay these people. GRRRR.

these roading changes must be right because the experts have deemed it so. The cost of the ACTUAL work may be $8000 but what about the consultants, the roading reports, the committees the sub committees the RMA consultations. $8000 for the concrete and the trades people was the cheap part of the exercise. I wonder if the council will ever reveal the true cost of another ill conceived botch up.

I would have thought that a roundabout or lights at the Oropi Rd/Maleme St intersection would prevent alot more crashes and near misses than this....

Not enough room....

When someone is turning right into mansels (heading out of town) the island sticks out too much and its very tight to get around that and the car to continue down the road......
