More medals for Bay lifesavers

Mount Maunganui's fleet-footed female beach sprinters have won world championship silver, amid another flurry of medals for New Zealand surf lifesavers at the Rescue 2014 interclub world championships in France overnight.

Arna Wright, Olivia Eaton, Kendall Elliott and Holly Moczydlowski came flying home in the beach relay to finish just behind the slick team from City of Perth.

Omanu club member Max Beattie, competing for his Australian club Northcliffe, won bronze in the men's board race, behind indefatigable world champion clubmate Shannon Eckstein and Mooloolaba's Luke Cuff, with two more Kiwis, Cory Taylor and Nick Malcolm, in fourth and fifth respectively.

Great Britain's George Haynes was 10th after spending the last two summers training and competing in New Zealand with the Mount Maunganui club, with Mount teammate Andrew Newton 16th.

Taylor finished ninth in the men's ski race too, just ahead of Auckland's Mike Lee, competing for Surfers Paradise, while Mount's Sam Shergold was 15th in a stacked race won by Australian defending champion Lachie Tame.

Olympian Naomi Flood won the women's race, with the best of the New Zealand contingent Ceris Graham (Trigg Island, WA) in seventh and Brooke Shergold in 12th.

Kiwis Chris Dawson and Kevin Morrison also helped the Northcliffe team to fourth in the open men's tube rescue.

Papamoa's outstanding results have also continued, with their open men's taplin team making tomorrow's final and Natalie Peat finishing 10th in the women's board race.

Andrew Trembath won another gold medal in the youth division, capturing the 100m rescue medley in the pool, finishing less than 2seconds clear of Papamoa clubmate Ben Johnston.

It Keeps On Flowing

On and On, the massive efforts of preparation for World Championships in Surf Lifesaving disciplines are paying off so well for the three teams from Tauranga City. Papamoa Beach, Omanu, and Mount Maunganui... Plus some ring-ins who train here and compete for overseas clubs, have all turned in unprecedented results and medal tallies. I feel quite sure that some team members will be on "Excess Baggage Watch" when they check-in for the home flights....so many medals! Well done to all competitors, all supporters who traveled to France, all supporters who stayed at home, and everyone else who helped with fundraising, profiling, and all other forms of assistance. It's quite easy to see a cohesion within the communities along the Beach and through the City and surrounds because of this event in which locals have done so amazingly well! Congratulations. (Who is thinking about a Civic Reception?). Bill Gibson-Patmore.
