Pontoon repair work begins

Tauranga City Council will begin replacing piles on the pontoons along the waterfront damaged during bad weather earlier this year.

Work on the pontoons starts today with TCC aiming to complete repairs by the end of October, in time for the 2014 Tauranga Boat Show.

During June, driving onshore waves smashed along The Strand reclamation, caused by easterly winds which peaked at 111km/h.

The pontoons were damaged after being repeatedly thrown back against the piles, some of which broke, by the wave action, says Frank.

TCC communications manager Frank Begley says most of the work will be carried out from a barge which will mean minimal disruption to the public.

"Because of this the repairs will not stop people from carrying out their usual activities in the area.

'The contractors will be doing their work from north to south, so from the city-end towards the Mount.”

Frank says if any work needs to be undertaken from the walkway it will be barricaded off for public safety.
