Scooter accident in Welcome Bay

UPDATED 9.15AM: A young person knocked off their scooter after colliding with a vehicle in Welcome Bay is on their way to Tauranga Hospital this morning.

St John paramedics were called to the accident outside Welcome Bay School about 8.30am.

An ambulance leaves the scene this morning.

School principal Nik House confirms it is not one of the school's pupils involved in the accident.

Nik believes a young person, not wearing a school uniform, was riding past the school and hit the back of a vehicle turning into the staff carpark.

He says they fell off and were lying on the side of the road.

School staff were at the scene assisting with traffic build up and looking after the youth, who did not appear seriously injured and was able to move onto a stretcher with assistance.

The accident happened at the same time Tauranga City Council officials were visiting the school to assess road safety infrastructure.

Nik says with Welcome Bay's increasing population, the road outside the school is becoming increasingly busy.

This area really does need remedial work, its chaos before/after school.
