Return plea for stolen iPod

Police are asking the man who stole a $300 silver iPod from a six-year-old girl in Papamoa to return the item before CCTV footage of the theft is released.

Martin Galloway and his daughter Hayley were shopping at Countdown in Papamoa on August 19 when her iPod was taken.

Police are asking for the return of a $300 silver iPod from a six-year-old girl in Papamoa recently.

Martin says Hayley was helping him scan items at a self-service checkout and had put the music device down.

'She had put her iPod on the table behind us and we went to grab it after getting the bags and it was gone.

'I queried her and said ‘Are you sure you put it down there?' and she said ‘Yes'. So we went to the help desk at the supermarket and asked if anyone had handed one in and they said ‘No'.”

Martin says they had another quick look around the shop before heading home.

Ten minutes after arriving home Martin received a call from Countdown telling them someone had been seen on CCTV footage taking the iPod.

'They showed us the footage but we weren't able to identify them.”

Martin says Hayley is pretty disappointed at having the item stolen because it's her favourite toy.

'She takes it everywhere with her. I tell her not to take it into shops and she did this time.”

Senior Constable Adrian Oldham says they have CCTV footage of the man who took the iPod but are giving the offender a chance to return the item before releasing the images.

Adrian says the man of interest was with his partner, their baby and two children.

'The woman is described as being in her early 20s with long black hair, reasonably attractive, and she is holding what looks to be a one-year-old child.

'The man that stole it is about the same age and was wearing brown chinos with a black sweatshirt, white sandshoes and a black beanie.”

Adrian is asking the man or the woman involved to return to the iPod to either Countdown or Papamoa Police Station before police pursue the matter further.

People with information about the iPod are asked to contact their local police station or alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.

Do your job and find and prosecute the thief. To say just return the stolen item is not good enough. This person is a thief and should be found and prosecuted. What a cop-out, :-)

Shame the guy who stole it, and also what the heck is a 6 year old doing with a $300 ipod? Seriously?? No one younger than 10 should have a device like that, what is the world coming too.

WHY WAIT ?

If the police have evidence of the crime - CCTV footage - then they should act on it ASAP. If that involves releasing the footage to the media, then so be it. OR are they trying to protect the identify of a criminal for some other reason??

Age doesn't matter!

Surely it is the point that some low life has stolen this girls iPod ? I am sure there are many adults who put their phones down on counters while packing shopping. I hope she gets the iPod back soon. I get sick of people trying to find blame with the victims.

So

has an arrest been made or are the police sitting on their hands in the hope that the perpetrator of this crime will hand himself in.?? Are they all to busy filling the road infringement coffers to go out and do some proper police work.
