Todd takes over Tony's seat

National's Todd Muller is the new Bay of Plenty MP after clinching the seat by more than 20,000 votes tonight.

Todd, at Te Puna Rugby Club, has just given his thank you speech in front of 200 people in what he describes as a 'very humbling” result.

Todd in Te Puna tonight with parents Mike and Trish, wife Michelle, and children Amelia, Aimee and Bradley.

'Today was a surreal day when you have been working so hard and then you can't do anything on the last day.

'But certainly as I sit here and look at all the local party members that have worked so hard, and being in Te Puna where I come from with such long family history I feel quite humbled."

Todd gained 20,013 votes with Labour's Clare Wilson next best at 5884.

He says it is 'historic” night for the National Party.

'To have lifted out party vote in each election for the last three elections, I think this in time will be seen as an historical achievement.

'It was a childhood dream of mine and to be an MP in my home area, and at a time when National is coming in with such strong support from here locally and across the country, it's an exciting time.”

Todd Muller looks set to move from an 'Unemployed door knocker” to a regular at the Beehive come Monday if early polling results are anything to go by.

The Bay of Plenty National candidate is miles ahead of the other candidates for his electorate, putting more than 7000 votes on NZ First candidate Raymond Dolman currently.

Todd is marking the evening with about 200 friends, family and supporters at Te Puna Rugby Club.

If he manages to take over retiring MP Tony Ryall's seat, Todd says he will be headed to Wellington as early as Monday.

"It's been a dream of mine since I was a child to be a politician."

Todd's spent the day playing sport and hanging out with his wife Michelle, and three children Aimee, Amelia and Bradley.
