Hawke's Bay defeated the Steamers 36-17 in Napier this afternoon to keep the Ranfurly Shield.
The Steamers last beat Auckland, 33-28, to win the shield in 2004 but failed to win it a second today.
Tim Bond joined the Steamers line up for the game this afternoon.
The half time score favoured the Magpies, who were in the lead with 14 points to the Steamers three.
Heading into the second half, Hawke's Bay managed to widen the gap posting the 36-17 win at full time.
Since 1922, Bay of Plenty have won 25, Hawke's Bay 17, with one drawn match. Last year at ASB Baypark, Bay of Plenty Steamers defeated the Magpies 24-20.
