Assaulter bailed to Northland

An unemployed man accused of two separate assaults in Papamoa in August has been granted bail to a Northland address after appearing in Tauranga District Court this week.

Cody Jack Pearson, 26, pleaded guilty to charges of assault with intent to injure, common assault, and theft of a television set when he appeared on Monday.

Police withdrew a charge of robbery.

Pearson, who was in custody following his arrest, is bailed to his brother's address in Kaukapakapa and is on a 24 hour curfew at the address.

The court heard how in the first assault on August 22, Pearson and an unknown associate went to an address and spoke to a resident.

Pearson was allowed on the property when he said he wanted to talk to the man's flatmate.

He then struck the man twice in the face with his elbow, knocking him to the ground. He demanded entry to the house and took the man inside where he threw him on the couch, punched him and again demanded to know where the flatmate was.

Pearson searched the flatmate's room and took a television set from the wall.

On August 29, at another Papamoa address, Pearson punched a person twice on the jaw while asking questions about a motorcycle that was stolen from the garage two days earlier.

Police opposed the bail request, but it was granted by Judge Simon Menzies.

Pearson is on bail until October 29 while a pre-sentence report is prepared. Judge Menzies ordered Pearson be driven to Northland immediately after Monday's hearing.
