Fire in vacant Papamoa house

UPDATED 8.30AM: Police confirm they are dealing with an arson at an empty house on Dickson Road, Papamoa this morning.

Police and firefighters are at the scene this morning after a neighbour phoned reporting smoke coming from a window of the house about 7.30am.

A reporter at the scene says the house, which appears to have no one living in it, is nextdoor to a vacant section at the intersection of Dickson and Longview roads.

He says there are two broken windows, one which appears suspicious as it is thick glass and untouched by fire.

Police have told the reporter to leave as it is a crime scene.

A neighbour, who would not be named, says the house is known as a 'tinnie house' where drugs have been sold from.

The neighbour believes the house is well-known by police.

Police and firefighters remains inside the house investigating. The fire is out.

Mount Maunganui, Papamoa and Greerton Fire Brigades were called to the fire about 7.30am.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips says firefighters responded to reports of a fire in the lounge of an unoccupied house.

'Police and a fire service investigator have been called to the scene. It as a fire in an abandoned house but it has not been confirmed as arson yet.

'Greerton Fire Brigade was stood down and Mount Maunganui and Papamoa fire brigades are still at the scene.”

Jaron says the fire was called in by a neighbour who saw smoke coming from a window of the house.
