Car thief’s sentencing adjourned

The sentencing of a Mongrel Mob member who admitted to stealing multiple vehicle from Tauranga petrol stations has been adjourned.

Sean Patrick Broderick, 46, was due to be sentenced on five counts of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, three counts of theft under $500, one of shoplifting and one of possession of a pipe when he appeared in Tauranga District Court today.


A Tauranga man has been remanded in custody and is expected to be sentenced on September 29.

Instead, his sentencing was put off until September 29 to allow for a medical report to be prepared.

Four of the five vehicle theft charges related to vehicles stolen in July and August from petrol stations across the city while their owners were inside paying for petrol.

The fifth charge relates to an incident in Whangarei.

According to court documents, on July 28 Broderick stole a Holden Commodore valued at $8000 and a Ford Ranger valued at $35,000 on July 31.

He then stole a Toyota Corolla valued at $10,000 on August 1 and a Great Wall valued at $18,000.

The cars were taken from Pak ‘n' Save fuel on Cameron Road, Mobil on Chapel St, Mobil on Otumoetai Rd and BP Summit on Waihi Rd.

Broderick was identified on CCTV footage and later arrested.

On August 3, Broderick stole of $164.24 worth of petrol from BP Ngatai Rd and a backpack, headphones and a carabina totalling $650 from Smith City in Tauranga.

He was remanded in custody until September 29.
