Fair Go applies the screws

Fair Go is turning up the heat on a Tauranga businessman and his company tonight.

Gordon Harcourt, reporter for the TVNZ consumer watchdog show, stood outside the businessman's flash waterside apartment at Sulphur Point and harangued him through a loudhailer for half an hour.

Watch Fair Go at 8pm tonight on TV One for full coverage.

'I wonder when you are going to pay the debt owed by your company Mr Mann?” yelled Gordon, for everyone in the neighbourhood to hear.

The businessman, Kevin Mann, is a director of Westminster Pacific NZ Ltd, which is ignoring a $50,000 award and fine against it.

The man owed the money, Brian Moxey, is believed to be seriously ill with melanoma.

'It's been four years and Mr Moxey hasn't received a cent,” shouted Gordon at Kevin.

Gordon arrived outside Kevin's apartment with a six by three metre backdrop hoarding emblazoned with the word ‘Unpaid' and the amount: $52,100.

Gordon says he's been completely ignored by Kevin for a year, and today's theatrics outside the apartment were an attempt to shame and humiliate him into paying up; even though it is a company debt.

'Fair Go takes these things seriously. There's one thing that angers people and makes them feel powerless and that's unpaid debt.”

Kevin didn't respond to Gordon's appeal, delivered by loudhailer.

The lights were on and someone was home at Kevin's apartment in the sumptuous Nautilus complex, but there was no willingness to engage with Gordon.

Regardless the veteran Fair Go campaigner says the matter won't rest.

Watch Fair Go at 8pm tonight (Monday, September 15) on TV One for full coverage.

SunLive has not been able to reach Kevin for comment.

Well done to Gordon for putting some heat on the guy. Thick skins abound in the business world though. I suggest some action be taken to take some assets away or put him in prison and let his victim stay in his apartment. That sounds like an idea or two. Shall we take the hat around?

How can someone...

...ignore a Court judgement, and carry on "business as usual", as if nothing had happened? Surely, that's contempt of Court? They should simply give him 30 days to pay and if it isn't done, sequester his assets, and suspend trading on his business. Pay the debt from the assets seized, then impose a fine for contempt of Court. If it was a fine imposed by a Court, they would do that so why shouldn't they do it in support of a Court judgement?

Weak courts

Where is the enforcement of the award and debt? Why has the court not enforced it to recover the debt. Way to easy to just ignore everything.
