Jon-Paul Tobin 16th after first day

Racing has gotten underway for Ohope Beach born windsurfer Jon-Paul Tobin at the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships being held in Spain.

The 2012 Olympian who is based in Auckland's North Shore came away with two top ten race results – 9th and 10th –and sits 16th overall after day one.

The Laser, Radial, and men's and women's windsurfers were on the water doing battle in the qualifying rounds for their respective world titles.

It's been a good result on the water for Tauranga sailors Sam Meech and Thomas Saunders on day two of the Laser class racing.

Sam started the day with a 2nd place and now lies 14th overall. His second race of the day was a 43rd which he can discard from his point score but Meech now needs to remain consistent to keep up with the front runners.

While Thomas, the Kiwi team's youngest Laser competitor, remains well placed in 15th and just one point adrift of team-mate Sam. Saunders recorded a 22nd and a 5th in racing today.

Points are very close at this early stage in the series and the kiwi riders will be back on the water tomorrow for more racing.

National qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games is also on offer at the Sailing World Championships.

The NZL Sailing Team includes New Zealand's top Olympic campaigners who have made the top 20% in their most recent (respective) class World Championships or pinnacle event and have shown consistency of performance over the year including other significant Championships.
