Bee awareness abuzz at market

Honey combs, hives and bees are all on display at the Tauranga Farmers Market today as part of National Bee Awareness month.

Tauranga Farmers Market manager Trixie Allen says stallholders have a connection with bees in their production have displays to emphasise the important role bees have in food production.

Kaimai Range Honey have brought along a honey comb, which is of all sorts of shapes, to show people.

They did bring in the hive this morning, says Trixie.

'They were a little concerned that it was a little too cold but they still brought it in, which was great.”

There is also a honey prize pack for people to win, with honey wax candles and all sorts of other honey products. It's free to enter, people just have to write their name on a paper to go into the draw to win.

Aside from the wet weather, Trixie says the day has been going really well.

'We've had excellent results around all the stall holders taking part in the displays. A lot of them have the bumble bees that they use for hives for pollination and others have information leaflets on their stands to show you how they interact.

'Bumble bees are used for tomato pollination and two of our stall holders have their hives with them. The hives aren't live and have finished now. Bumble bees are amazing little creatures who work really hard.”

She says it's been a very successful awareness, which the day is all about.

This is the first time the market has held a bee awareness day and Trixie says they plan on holding more in the future because of the importance of bees to the environment.

'We sort of take bees for granted and forgot how many people in this market alone rely on them for the food we eat.”
