Checks and balances for referenda?

In answer to Don Campbell's excellent letter 'A dangerous policy' (The Weeknd Sun, September 5) pointing out the perils of binding referenda, there would obviously need to be checks and balances brought into any system that was decided on.

Perhaps Don was perfectly happy with the recent sell off of our assets, but there were many who weren't and to dismiss the opportunity of controlling our politicians more than just once every three years, simply because we may be frightened of the youth of our country taking over and having it their way, is rather short-sighted.

The present message inspiring the same youth (eg Mana-Dotcom) is rather disturbing and we have never had that message before, it is going to be interesting as to just how they handle it.

After all, if they do actually vote in large enough numbers, we may end up wishing we had binding referenda to fix the problem they have given us.
