Dog owners have beach rights too

Enduring yet another verbal attack from a group of elderly ladies on the beach one morning - yes, I've had more than one in recent months - I feel compelled to speak up for dog owners' rights.

Dogs are allowed to walk on some areas of our local beaches without a leash. The Tauranga City Council has allowed for this in the district plan, in order for a dog and its owner to enjoy exercising on our beautiful beaches.

Of course a dog owner must be responsible at all times for picking up the dog's mess and for keeping the dog under control – but this does not mean the dog has to be on a lead for every second it is on the beach.

If someone objects to this, there are plenty of beaches where dogs cannot roam free, which they can enjoy.

People should be aware of these rules before attacking innocent dog owners, who are well within their rights.

I agree some dogs can be intimidating, but so too can some of you old biddies with your vicious tongues and nasty bites. Come on Kiwis, let's all enjoy this beautiful country of ours together in harmony.
