Watch out for heavy rain

A severe weather watch is in place for the Bay of Plenty and the Coromandel Peninsula as a complex trough of low pressure crosses the country, threatening a wet weekend.

The low is expected to bring heavy rain to the regions late Friday and early Saturday before heading away to the east of Saturday night, warns The MetService.

Rain is on the way, reports The MetService.

'The heaviest falls are expected about the ranges of Nelson, Buller, Westland and Fiordland, also Mt Taranaki, Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty, with a period of significant rain possible about Northland.

'This watch is for the possibility of rainfall amounts reaching warning criteria (for example 100mm falling in under 24 hours) in these areas, mainly about the higher ranges.

'Significant rain is expected about higher parts of Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty from late Friday through much of Saturday.”

Rainfalls in the areas could also reach warning criteria, for example 100mm falling in under 24 hours, most especially about the ranges of eastern Bay of Plenty.
