Big blue bus rolls in

The political wheels keep on turning as the National Party looks to gain extra momentum heading in to the final week of the general election.

September 20 marks the end to months of campaigning, door knocking and shaking hands for many candidates, including National's Simon Bridges and Todd Muller.

Just over a week out the National Party's Tauranga and Bay of Plenty candidates were able to call on an extra vehicle of campaigning - the National Party bus in town for the day.

Decked fully in blue with John Key's face emblazoned on the side, the big bus is clocking up the kilometres across the country, helping drum up support for all its candidates.

Picking up Bay of Plenty and Tauranga candidates and party supporters yesterday, the bus made various stops in the area – Papamoa east, Palm Beach Plaza, and Mount Maunganui before ending up in Tauranga for the night.

Tauranga MP Simon Bridges says the bus is a great way to raise the party's profile and have 'a bit of fun” while campaigning.

But of the Bridges' clan it is oldest son Emlyn who was the most excited to be riding the big blue bus.

'It's his first bus ride. He's got two toy buses but it's good to get him in a blue one.

'We have been building it up for a couple of days saying it's John Key's bus because he knows he's my boss.”

Simon says about 80 volunteers and national supporters jumped on the bus throughout the trip.

Among the faithful supporters and volunteers is Young Nats Lower North Island chairman Christian Hermansen, on board for a large chunk of the North Island tour.

Based in Wellington the 22-year-old jumped onboard helping out at each stop with 'human hoardings” and drumming up political support.

'We have done Wellington to Napier. We have done Hastings and Waipukurau and now the Bay of Plenty.

'We are trying to help as many candidates as we can and it's just a big mobile billboard.”

The bus is today heading to the far north before travelling back down to Wellington.

nod and nod again

Simon will nod and nod and nod enthusiastically to everything his leader says. He reminds me of one of those nodding dogs popular in car back seats a few decades ago.

By far the best choice

Though the Nats are a long way from perfect, the thought of a coalition involving the others leaves me very worried. Simon would be great for a role in Justice. Who else are you going to pick as MP, a bar owner???

Agreeable Simon

Simon is very agreeable. He agrees with anything that will gather him a few votes.

Convince me people

All I see is character assassination with nothing coherent behind the comments. I'm afraid that there are one or two personalities on either side of the political tussle that I dislike and one or two that I distrust intensely. I am genuinely concerned that "change for changes sake" will give an unstable and intransigent parliament (Nothing but inter-party bickering) and NO Winston will NOT keep ANYONE honest! (Why do I keep hearing that nonsense?) What WILL/CAN he do that will make me want to vote for him? There were eight of them in parliament for three years and I'm not even sure that they found their offices. I want people that are going to show up and work their little butts off.

Mining

It would take more than a bus and cute kids tocancel out the impression left after Mr Bridges' epic fail on Victoria Forest and the latest lack of consultation on mining in Karangahake.

If Labour had been in power for the last 3 years NZ would now be stuffed. National has done a fantastic job and made NZ the envy of the Western world. Well done National.
