Hoarding artist raises stakes

With Election Day looming our political candidates are out there pressing the flesh and kissing babies in an attempt to secure your vote.

But here in Tauranga there is one man who just wants to give you a laugh – and make you think.

The artist behind a spate of airbrushed political hoardings has unveiled he has a new apprentice who helped on this latest piece which depicts Kim Dotcom, David Cunliffe, Winston Peters, Pita Sharples and John Key as 'good mates'. Photo: Bruce Barnard.

The artist behind the airbrushing of political hoardings around Tauranga has created a new piece, this time on a Maori Party hoarding featuring Dr Lance O'Sullivan.

The piece was placed on Elizabeth Street, near the roundabout intersecting with Takitimu Drive at 4.30pm today.

But instead of targeting the front, the artist has airbrushed Internet Party founder Kim Dotcom, Labour leader David Cunliffe, NZ First leader Winston Peters, Maori Party co-leader Pita Sharples and National leader John Key on the back.

'For this piece I thought I'd show them as all being mates, hanging out and having fun,” says the artist, who is maintaining anonymity for now.

'I reckon they've all got good things that they can offer the country, so why not all be in one big party? At least they can in this piece.”

The artist is particularly interested in people's reaction to his rendering of Kim Dotcom and John Key, both depicted holding spray cans.

He chose to use the back of the hoarding because it was simply a blank canvas and would have added other leaders, but ran out of room.

He also chose a black and white colour scheme to depict the idea of 'no divisions, you get what you see”.

'There are a lot of people my age who only know the signs, not the party or their policies.

'For some it can be as simple as whether you like the colour red, or the colour blue.”

During the last two weeks he's airbrushed Labour's Tauranga candidate Rachael Jones, NZ First leader Winston Peters, National leader John Key and Tauranga MP Simon Bridges.

Winston particularly took umbrage with his party's hoarding being targeted, calling the artist a 'looney tune”.

'Winston said the artist was a looney tune, so for this piece I depicted Kim Dotcom and John Key as the artists,” says the artist.

'I think the next one I do, Winston and me should be signing a treaty or something. I still like the guy, I don't want any hostility with him.”

His latest piece will be going up somewhere in Tauranga in the coming days. This time he'll be getting a little help.

Observant SunLive readers will notice he has signed his latest piece ‘S.A.S' – Secret Art Slaves.

That's because he now has an apprentice and wants to start up an artist collective in Tauranga, using S.A.S as a call to arms.

'The amount of artists that live here who are working at Pak ‘N' Save or something instead of creating art is just a waste of talent.

'This is call to them, I know there are people out there who are just as slaves to art as I am.”

'We'll all equal, there's no top artist, we just do anything on anything. You say it, we spray it.”

This new hoarding art is stationed near the Elizabeth Street roundabout.
