Police say the cyclist, who was wearing a helmet and other safety gear, was hit by a four door Mazda car.

'It appears the car drifted to the left and crashed with the cyclist as both travelled in the same direction.”

The intersection was cordoned off as the man was treated and flown to hospital with serious injuries.

The serious crash unit was also called in to investigate.

A Waikato Hospital spokesperson says he remains in a critical condition.
