Bernie Gillon has been named as the new speedway promoter at ASB Baypark.

Bernie has had extensive involvement in motor sport and has recently been President of the Bay of Plenty Speedway Association.

He has also been involved in speedway operations on a voluntary basis over the last three years proving significant 'hands on” experience.

Bay Venues chief executive officer Gary Dawson says they are excited to have Bernie take this opportunity which sees a local speedway identity in charge of the next stages of speedway development at ASB Baypark.

'There was considerable local and external interest in the role and we look forward to Bernie's commencement and the impact his enthusiasm and knowledge will make on the sport in Tauranga.”

Bernie says speedway has a long and rich history as an iconic sport in this region, starting at the old Baypark over 40 years ago and continuing at the new ASB Baypark Stadium since 2002.

'During the last three seasons the promotion of Speedway at ASB Baypark has been managed by Bay Venues and many positive changes have been made.

'I am honoured to be given the opportunity as a private promoter to build on the start that Bay Venues have made at Baypark Speedway. I'm looking forward to the challenge of providing a great racing environment for the competitors and affordable and exciting family entertainment.”

Bernie hopes this season will see several new driver signings from other tracks which will increase car numbers in all classes of racing.

Other than the usual Baypark classes of Sprint Cars, Super Saloons, Saloons, Stock Cars and Youth Mini Stock Cars, there will also be Midgets, Super Stock Cars & 6 Shooter Sprint Cars racing during the season.

The 2014/15 Speedway Racing Season commences with the Labour Weekend meeting on Saturday October 25 closely followed by the crowd favourite” fireworks” meeting on Saturday November 1.
