‘Bogan besties’ eliminated first

Tauranga home cooks June Lyall and Steph Usmar are the first team to be eliminated from New Zealand's version of My Kitchen Rules.

Dubbed the ‘Bogan Besties' June and Steph's medieval-themed instant restaurant ‘The Winchester Dungeon' failed to impress judges Ben Bayly and Gareth Stewart and fellow contestants.

The Tauranga duo's instant restaurant episode aired last week on TV One, with their three course meal rendering them a low 47 points.

Last night's episode ventured to Orewa for the last instant restaurant of group one, where pairing Tracey and Neil crushed any hopes the Tauranga team had of staying, by scoring 57 points.

As the lowest scorers in group one, June and Steph say they were ‘bummed' to be going home, but were nevertheless looking forward to getting back to their families.

Thanking the women for opening their home, Ben noted it would certainly be a lot quieter without these hilarious besties at the table.

'We're disappointed we didn't get to show our full potential as cooks, but we just wish all the other teams the best of luck,” say June and Steph.

SunLive caught up with June and Steph before the show aired. Read what they had to say here.

MKR NZ continues tonight with the introduction of the group two teams: Polynesian Cooks, Aaron and Heather, Ian and Sandie aka The Fireman and his Flame, Christchurch Cuties, Jessie and Ricki, Corporate Dads, Josh and Aaron, and Hawke's Bay Sisters, Kelly and Megan.

Really sorry to see these two go. They were a delight and there was no cattiness or nastiness in them. (Couldn't say the same about all of the teams.) I wasn't keen on their instant restaurant, but as people, they represented Tauranga very well indeed. The sad thing is that I'm sure they are both excellent cooks but someone has to be eliminated. The mixup over the pastry for the apple pie was a very human thing and I found myself empathizing with them. Never mind, Ladies, you may not have won the contest but you came across well, and there was no doubt about the warmth of your friendship and your light-hearted attitudes. Good job!

I don't understand how any of them got this far. if this is the best that the MKR can find............ These two put me off watching the show full stop.

Entertaining

I really enjoyed watching these two lovely Local ladies on MKR. They were certainly very honest, genuine, fun and brought a sense of humour to the show. It's the first time I've watched this show and only started watching to see the locals. I totally enjoyed the show but feel it's going to be rather bland without these characters.
