Dave's identity discovered

UPDATED 2:50PM: The man police knew only as 'Dave' has been identified thanks to help from the public.

Detective Sergeant Darryl Brazier says Dave, a Tauranga man, remains in a stable but serious condition in Tauranga Hospital but is expected to make a full recovery.

Police are in the dark about a man found collapsed at a business overnight.

The man was found collapsed at a Tauranga business site last night and could only tell police his name was ‘Dave'.

Darryl says police received numerous calls from the public "which meant that we were able to positively identify Dave early this afternoon".

"A couple from Tauranga called up after hearing the description of him as they were expecting him to show up at their place last night."

Tauranga Police would like thank all those members of the public that called in and provided information which has assisted in identifying Dave, he says.

'It's great that the community responded in the way that they did and so quickly to our call for assistance and we thank them.”

Darryl says Dave does not have any injuries of interest to police and they are satisfied there is nothing suspicious about the incident.

Earlier:

The man was found about 9.30pm last night at a business on Cameron Road and was admitted to Tauranga Hospital.

Detective Sergeant Darryl Brazier says the man gave them the name ‘Dave' but is now unable to speak to police due to his condition.

He says the man was found by staff at the business, but will not state which business it was.

'He had no identification with him and we would really like help from the public to identify this man.”

The man is described as a European, about 44 years old, of medium to solid build with short dark hair.

Darryl says he was wearing grey coloured shorts with a brown belt, a black coloured ‘Norsewear' brand jacket with grey/black short-sleeved collar t-shirt.

'He is in a stable but serious condition and we are not treating the circumstances surrounding his condition as suspicious.

'The man was not known to the occupants of the business premises where he was found.”

Darryl is hoping someone will come forward with information.

'We hope someone will claim him so we can talk to him when he is able. Someone must know who he is because he didn't go home last night.”

Anyone with information that can help in identifying Dave are urged to contact Tauranga Police Station on 07 577 4300.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.
