Cupcakes raise $8k for SPCA

Greenpark School's sweet approach to fundraising today is adding to Tauranga SPCA's Cupcake Day coffers totalling more than $8000.

Room 7 pupils are selling home-made baked goods to fellow classmates in support of the Greerton animal shelter as part of an on-going fundraising initiative.

'It's not necessarily about raising as much money as we can, it's about getting the children involved in the community and helping with the SPCA which the kids are so into already – they love animals,” says teacher Stephanie Harris.

To raise funds, the children are encouraging fellow classmates to purchase a raffle ticket by dropping 50 cents and their name into a box in front of their favourite cake for a chance to win it.

'We've got chocolate M&M cakes, black forest cakes, cupcakes, chocolate hazelnut banana cakes and vanilla cakes,” says Stephanie.

Other charities supported by the children so far this year include Starship Hospital, Cancer Society, ARRC Wildlife Trust and the Tauranga Foodbank.

As well as raising more than $100 for Starship by selling coffee to their teachers earlier this year, Stephanie says the pupils have also donated second-hand toys to Ronald McDonald House and are selling popcorn to raise funds for ARRC.

A whole school initiative saw pupils donate hundreds of cans of food to the Tauranga Community Foodbank.

'It's letting them [the pupils] know they can make a difference. I think that's the biggest thing is knowing that no matter who they are, they can make a difference.”

Tauranga SPCA cupcake co-ordinator Hannah Cobb says although funds are still being tallied, the shelter has been gifted more than $8000 so far from their cupcake day last week, corporate orders and community cupcake stalls across the Bay.

Hannah says funds go directly to the general care of animals at the Greerton shelter and this year's donations have surpassed previous years.

'It's been really successful. The amount of support we've had come on board from not only the public but bakeries as well which has been wonderful and schools have really got involved this year too.”
