Alleged building burglar arrested

A Hamilton builder who allegedly stole thousands of dollars' worth of building tools and equipment from Western Bay of Plenty building sites did so to fuel his methamphetamine addiction, according to police.

Chadrick Sheridan, 24, appeared in Tauranga District Court last week charged with driving while suspended, burglary over $5000, two counts of burglary between $500 and $5000, and one count of possessing utensils for methamphetamine.

Six Western Bay building sites were targetred between August 15 and 17.

Tauranga South Police Detective Sergeant Nigel Grey says Sheridan, originally from Gisborne, was arrested following the burglary of six Western Bay building sites between August 15 and 17.

The houses were located in Papamoa, Oropi, Pyes Pa and Omokoroa.

Sheridan is alleged to have burgled the houses under construction, with one builder losing $5000 worth of items from a Papamoa site.

A range of property was taken, including builder's tools, nail guns, paint sprayers, saw benches, as well as housing materials, kitchen appliances, heat pumps and extensive quantities of plumbing equipment and LED lights.

Nigel says the 24-year-old, who lives in Tauranga and works for a Hamilton building company, is believed to be linked to another nine burglaries.

'At the moment he is charged with three burglary charges. They are holding charges but he will be facing a lot more.”

At the time of the thefts one Tauranga builder told SunLive he lost a $5000 worth of tools taken from a Papamoa home.

It was the second burglary at the property in the last two months.

He said those responsible managed to break a hinge on a window to enter the home about 2am on August 17.

A number of large, costly items were taken including a grinder, spray painting unit, sanders and a Milwaukee saw.

Nigel says a small number of stolen items have been recovered by police.

'We have got minimal property back; just little bits and pieces. I think most of it went towards paying for his methamphetamine addiction.”

Nigel says Sheridan is remanded in custody in Waikeria Prison until reappearing in Tauranga District Court on September 15.
