Papamoa continues pool streak

Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club has made another splash in the pool winning back-to-back NZ Pool Championshiptitles in West Auckland at the weekend.

Holding on to a slender 89 point lead, ahead of Mount Maunganui, heading into day three of the championships yesterday, the club finished on a high note setting a new record in the final race of the event, winning the 6x50m Mega Relay in a time of 2 minutes, 22.29 seconds.

Papamoa finished on 979 points – 129 points clear of Mount Maunganui's 850 points, while Mairangi Bay came in third place with 562 points.

The first event of the 2014/15 Surf Life Saving New Zealand calendar at Auckland's West Wave Aquatic Centre saw about 400 races held across the competition.

The national champs for pool rescue events features events ranging from manikin carries and obstacles to line throw and rescue medleys. All events are based around rescue capability and are specific to saving people's lives.

Some of the day's top performances included Midway's Chris Dawson edging out Titahi Bay's Steven Kent and St Clair's Andrew McMillan in the 100m Manikin Tow with Fins in a time of 56.37.

Papamoa's Madison Kidd broke the U19 Women's Manikin Tow with Fins record in a time of 1.06.44 and teammate Natalie Peat edged out Wainui's Laura Quilter to set a new pool record in the 100m Manikin Tow with Fins in a time of 1.04.43.

New Zealand Youth Team member Jacob Hales, from Papamoa, continued the club's winning streak setting a new record in the 100m Manikin Tow with Fins in a time of 59.27.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand sport manager Mike Lord says the NZ Pool Championships is always an exciting event on the annual calendar and this year was full of highlights.

Mike is excited to see the continual growth and interest in the New Zealand Pool Championships at both a national and regional level.

"Now in its 12th year, pool champs is an exciting event that attracts huge crowds because of its unique and fun environment.

'It has a different vibe to competing at the beach and a draw card is that whole clubs can compete together and cheer each other on.”

The event also doubled as a farewell for New Zealand's surf lifesaving teams who are competing at the Lifesaving World Championships in France from September 13-26.
