Te Puna takes JMC title

UPDATED 3.05PM: Te Puna has run away with the Under 13 Western Bay of Plenty JMC Junior Rugby title – remaining undefeated all season – after squaring off against Greerton this afternoon at Mount Maunganui's Blake Park.

In a fast and exciting rugby match, some quality football was played with great attitude, which thrilled a large crowd at the final, where Te Puna won 45-17.

Greerton Chargers trailed 17-5 at half-time with one very good try and were still very much in the game, having suffered a couple of early tries against them, while a fired-up Te Puna team had the wind at their back.

Greerton went into the second half with a strong wind in their favour but struggled to make gains with it.

Te Puna scored an early try in the second half, making it a hard slog for a Greerton Chargers to come back.

It was an excellent game that could have gone either way, but some excellent runaway tries from Te Puna swung the score convincingly, to take out the tournament in a well-deserved win.

It was great to see an excellent game of rugby, with clean fair play both on the field and plenty of positive support from the sideline.

At full-time Te Puna performed a haka, with Greerton lining up to the challenge.

Earlier in the day younger rugby players battled it out on the Sir Gordan Tietjens Field to win regional glory in their respective age-group finals.

First, the Under 10s finals concluded with Rangataua snatching a 25-24 victory from Mount Green after the game kicked off at 8.30am.

The Under 11s age-group saw Te Puna take the age-group title 36-7 from Papamoa Blue.

The U12 Katikati versus Greerton Marist Black match at 11am was much closer, with Katikati winning 14-10, followed by the U13s seeing Te Puna win over Greerton Chargers.

Western Bay of Plenty JMC committee delegate Andrew Rout says the all the games provided high quality rugby to entertain supporters, who turned up to watch the finals day of games.

'In the Under 10s this morning we couldn't ask for more – the tackling, running and support and with a 25-24 game, it just says it all.”

'But at the end of the day the boys have all played well this season for this day – and they get a lot of pride getting to the finals and hopefully taking a finals trophy.”

The teams taking out today's finals games become Western Bay champions in their age-groups but also go onto vie for the Champions of Champions tournament, which is Eastern, Western and Central Bay combined.

'If they win those competitions they essentially become Bay of Plenty champions,” says Andrew. 'I believe this tournament will be played next weekend in Eastern Bay of Plenty.”

Andrew says parent and volunteer support is crucial to the 16-round competition, which began early-May. He's really happy with today's turnout as well.

'We have good support throughout the year – and the finals bring everyone together.”
