Weather watch for peninsula

The Coromandel has been issued a Severe Weather Watch for the likelihood of significant heavy rain on the peninsula tomorrow.

The Metservice warning predicts rain and strong easterlies for northern New Zealand, with Northland, Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula in the sightline.

The Coromandel Peninsula has been issued a Severe Weather Watch for heavy rain tomorrow.

'Between a broad area of low pressure to the north of New Zealand and a ridge of high pressure over the South Island, strong to gale easterlies are affecting the upper North Island,” says the Metservice.

This watch is for possible severe easterly gales over Northland today and especially Sunday morning – and now also covers Auckland, where easterlies may reach severe gale force from Sunday morning.

Metservice says winds should ease significantly during Sunday afternoon in Northland, and Sunday evening in Auckland, as a front moves southwards across the upper North Island.

'A heavy rain warning is in force for Northland, and this watch now covers the likelihood of significant heavy rain for Coromandel during Sunday,” says the Metservice.

'People in these areas are urged to exercise caution and stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings."

The watch will be reviewed by 9pm tonight.
